Together We Go; New 7-Month Pilot Project to Connect People and Places with New Experiences

August 25, 2026

Brock Community Health Centre, Durham Region Transit (DRT), and Brock High School are excited to announce Together We Go, a barrier-free getaway that offers a chance for older adults to experience a variety of destinations outside of Brock Township, using DRT and chartered services. Funding for this program comes to the Brock Community Health Centre from the Government of Ontario’s 2026-27 Seniors Community Grant (SCG) Program.

Together We Go

This is a 7-month pilot project to increase participants’ awareness of public transit programs and services; increase residents’ confidence in using DRT to access local and area culture and tourism events; and help to promote social connections that continue beyond the term of this project.

Brock High School’s Hospitality & Tourism Program will prepare brown bag lunches, and attend the monthly outings, when possible, to promote intergenerational relationships. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to community-based solutions that address the many non-medical determinants of health through accessible and equitable programs.

The Idea

“We want residents to feel a sense of belonging in their community,” said Janet McPherson, Executive Director of Brock CHC. “This program will demonstrate how our residents of all ages can leverage public transit services – to attend broader community, cultural and/or sporting events and activities outside Brock Township – to address social isolation as a health issue.”

“When transit is within reach, opportunity is within reach. Transit plays an important role in helping older adults stay connected and independent; accessing more services, activities and social connections that support their well-being. The funding provided by the Province of Ontario for this pilot program will allow their stories, knowledge and lived experiences to continue enriching and inspiring younger generations,” said Bill Holmes, General Manager of Durham Region Transit.

“We recognize that maintaining mobility access to the wider community throughout a person’s life is key to ensuring they access services as needed and maintain positive mental health through ongoing communication. Many individuals rely on their personal vehicle for their mobility needs, but over time, may rely on public transit. Ensuring older community members are confident in their ability to navigate the transit system is something that Brock High School students would enjoy supporting,” said Russell Davidson, Principal of Brock High School.
