Discover the Joy of Free Line Dancing at Brock CHC

August 13, 2026

Recently, Brock Community Health Centre’s Summer Students visited the Line Dancing program. They wanted to learn more about the participants and see the impact of the program firsthand.

The primary goal was to take photos and gather insights to help promote the class to new members. However, right at the door, they instead found themselves joining in. Even with some subpar dancing, neither of them felt out of place. As long as they kept moving their feet, this welcoming group was happy to have them there.

The Health & Social Benefits

Line Dancing is the longest-running activity/wellness program at Brock Community Health Centre, spanning 18 years and counting! In fact, the program began before primary health care was in place, springing from a focus group of local residents who shared they wanted a “fun activity” in their community.

While members have come and gone over nearly two decades, Katie Probst has been a happy member for all 18 years. When asked about the program, she shared:

“This is the number one thing for putting off dementia, it’s better than crossword puzzles, it’s better than Sudoku–both of which I don’t enjoy–and you’re socially engaged. I’ve been to workshops about seniors and social engagement is number one to keep you healthy and engaged in life. Some seniors isolate and that’s the worst thing they can do. It’s fun, we laugh, we have a great teacher, and it’s a variety of songs.”

Katie makes a great point! Although she speaks for seniors, her perspective applies to all ages. Social connection is vital for both mental and physical health, which is why Brock CHC opens this program to all ages.

The wide variety of music genres keeps sessions interesting and relevant, while learning new dances keeps the brain (and feet) challenged. To accommodate everyone, the first hour focuses on beginner-level dance steps, while the second hour introduces intermediate-level dances. Whether you join every Monday or attend every couple of weeks, it’s a wonderful way to boost your overall health.

Beyond the dancing, participants also enjoy quarterly potluck lunches featuring guest speakers on participant-selected health topics, combining good food, education, and community support!

Much More Than Activity

This group is a wonderful community, and Deb, another member of the program, highlighted how the class supports mental health:

“It gives you something to do, especially if you are having a bad day. It’s something to concentrate on, to get your mind off of what your problem is elsewhere. We all laugh together and if we make mistakes, we make mistakes, what the heck!”

While the physical benefits are undeniable, the social connections and mental health support are what truly keep participants coming back. Even if someone only stays for an hour, their day is brighter for it.

For many, line dancing serves as a welcome break from personal struggles. While it’s common to isolate or stay home during difficult times, these participants have found that coming to class provides a safe, uplifting space to take their minds off life’s challenges and reminds them that they have a caring community standing behind them every week.

Overcoming Barriers to Wellness

A major reason for the program’s success is Brock CHC’s commitment to removing barriers. Similar classes in surrounding towns either require travel or charge a fee. In contrast, this local class remains completely free.

Katie highlighted this accessibility:

“It’s free! There’s nothing free here but everything Community Health Centre sponsors, Loretta and the group get grants, and that pays for everything. There’s no excuse for people not to be fit in this town, it’s free and it’s accessible. I mean, you don’t even know you’re exercising, and boy, is it good exercise. You can get up to 10,000 steps without realizing!”

Come Join the Class!

While Line Dancing offers many health benefits for seniors, Brock CHC emphasizes that this program is an excellent active outlet for residents of all ages. Whether you are looking to meet your physical activity targets, build new friendships, or simply enjoy a supportive and lighthearted environment, there is a spot available for you. Join us when we resume on Sept 14!
